What's in a Name? Why we chose "Speckle"

May 13, 2025

Speckle is a simple word with various meanings. It was important to us when choosing a name which reflects our long-term vision and identity, rather than simply describing what we do.

We came across two definitions. One refers to a small area that is different (as in colour) from the main part; the other refers to many small spots of colour. We felt both adequately represent the neurodivergent experience: not simply different from others, but unique as well. The neurodivergent community is made up of different experiences, traits and perspectives that come together to form a unique whole.

The start of the word, "spec," hints at the spectrum. This reminds us of the broad range of needs and experiences within the autistic community and calls for flexibility and inclusivity in how we offer support. The ending, "kle," sounds like "sparkle," which suggests hope, light and possibility. There's also something of "special" in there too, without being overly sentimental about it.

Together, Speckle represents diversity in care, celebrates individuality and connection, and carries our promise to create a platform where every user feels valued and supported.
